Ubuntu, What is That?

Hello,

I have heard some students at the Computer Lab asking: “what this Windows that different from Windows?” Or “over programmed Windows” Let me explain it a little.

Before I go into details, I want to announce that we have upgraded from Ubuntu 7.10 to Ubuntu’s latest release 8.04, aka Hardy Heron. The 14 stations are ready for use starting form Tomorrow.

Now let me talk a little about Ubuntu.

Ubuntu is a A Zulu word that mean “humanness”. The system is a community developed Linux-based operating system (click this link to learn about other Linux distribution). Ubuntu is an open source system that is distributed for free. You can either download it from the official website or order free Dvds. It comes in 2 versions, a desktop edition and a server edition. Ubuntu comes with a lot of free/open source software like Firefox (web browser), OpenOffice.org (office suite), F-spot (camera/phone photo manager). You can easily add software to your system through its Package Manager utility. You can find hundreds of free (open source) programs ranging from office productivity, sound and video editing, translation, language learning to astronomy.

Ubuntu can be run live. This means that you can run it right from a CD without changing anything to your current system. So, give it a try and it you like it and can’t get rid of your current system, do ahead and install it, you will end up with a dual boot, ie. Windows and Ubuntu. When you start your computer you will be asked to choose which operating system you want to use.

Note that your Windows applications will not work on Ubuntu. There are some programs (commercial) like Cross Over and Wine that can handle .exe files on Linux, for more information click this think The good news is that there are open source alternatives to most Windows software.

What can be done in Ubuntu?

Everything.

You can browse the internet, watch movies, listen to music, sync your iPod, download photos from your camera and manage you photos library, edit sound and video, email (Evolution mail or Thunderbird), word processing, spreadsheets, presentations (powerpoint), edit photos (Gimp)…

Installing Ubuntu over Windows is an easy process. Refer to www.ubuntu.com for details. If you have any questions, feel free to post a comment or send me an email.

Ubuntu 7.10 on ALC Lab Machines

Yes!

This is what kept us busy. We have installed Ubuntu Linux on our 14 computers at the computer lab. For more information about Ubuntu, please check www.ubuntu.com

Ubuntu Login

Now we have dual boot, Windows XP and Ubuntu 7.10. We will soon upgrade to Ubuntu 8 once it’s out (in a week I guess)

Since last Friday, Internet connection seems to be stable, compared to when it used to drop for no obvious reason.

Ubuntu comes loaded with a lot of free programs that would help you as a student in improving your skills.

Hello,

We had our first meeting yesterday. This time Catherine Bendayan introduced us to the concept of light in taking photos. She discussed aperture and shutter speed values. For those who couldn’t make it. Catherine will probably do a review next Tuesday before we go on.

Phun physics

This is a cool program for learning about some aspects of physics.

“Phun is meant to be a playground where people can be creative. It can also be used as an educational tool to learn about physics concepts such as restitution and friction.”
