aSalam 3′liykum
Ahlan ya aSdaqa’i wa zumala’i. Kif halkum? Bekhireen? Alhamdu’lela!
I wish you all the best with your Arabic classes, and hope you all obtain your goals, Incha’Allah. I’m returning to NYC to work with the United Nations, in the Department of Peacekeeping Operations. If any of you are ever in NYC, feel free to get in touch with me, as my door is always open. You have a place to stay in the heart of Madhattan!

“Ana cement!”
The title of this post means, “I have gained weight” in Moroccan Arabic. Say
it just as you see it in English, and you will instantaneously make
your Moroccan host smile with delight. Moroccans have a reputation
for amazing hospitality, and a huge part of that hospitality involves
eating your fill and then some. After 4 weeks of living here, I can
tell you that my clothes that were once loose are now just barely
fitting. One of my skirts has a small rip in the waist (partially
because I tried to stuff my digital camera in my pocket, but also
because Ana cement!). I came downstairs one day and play yelled at
my host mom, “Look what you did/shoofii shnoo dirti!!!” She came
towards me with a puzzled look on her face, then I showed her the rip,
and that look turned into a proud smile.
And those Moroccans can be sneaky about it too. I am convinced that my
host mom has her foreign students sit next to her just so she can keep
tabs on how much–or how little–they are eating. The communal plate
in the middle of the table allows her to trick you: every time you
finish what is in front of you, she reaches over to the top of the
pile of food and pushes some down your way when you’re not looking. I
caught her once stealthily putting another piece of bread in front of
me while I was catching a glimpse of what was on tv. When I looked
back at her, she just responded, “Kool/eat!” then everyone else at the
table chimed in, “Kool/eat!” I’m convinced that the communal plate is
used on purpose to get guests to eat more. That and the table on
wheels that converts the sitting area into a dining area allows guests
to make enough room for themselves to get up after the meal. (Ok, that
one’s a bit of a stretch!)
Once I suggested to my host mom that she only put in half of the
deliciousness in the food so that I wouldn’t eat as much. That made
her smile just about as much as the rip in the skirt.
For now, I’m embracing the new weight; no use fighting it. I admit
that I needed to gain some. And it’s good weight from healthy food,
Hamdillah.

I guess it would be a nice idea to comment, suggest as well as put whatever you feel like saying about the center into words. This would be a plus for both students and teachers. If you take care of your learning center, you will not only benefit by its programs and activities but also help improve it and turn it into a better place where you can learn English.

Hello,
Today i went to the ALC to check my scores (about the final exam), but the security gard told me that it wasn’t possible because the other classes were sitting for the exam and asked me to leave. After few minutes, a girl with her mother came to check the scores too, and he let them enter !!! I nocked the door another time, then he showed up and told me that if i don’t leave he will cut my hand !! What a chock !! I want to complain about him and ask the director to punish him severely about this, because it can happen again !! In that case, the ALC will loose its students ans its success too !!
Sincerely
